EXCERPT: A few years ago, Phillip Kunz, a sociologist at Brigham Young University received hundreds of Christmas cards during the holiday season.

They came in all colors and sizes. They contained pictures of moms and dads and kids with dogs. They were full of good news about recent college graduates or the purchase of a new home.
